A novel of English life of a melodramatic character, so fascinating and so stirring that the most hardened reader can hardly fail to receive a series of thrills. Edward Phillips Oppenheim (October 22, 1866 – February 3, 1946), was an English novelist, in his lifetime a major and successful writer of genre fiction including thrillers. Featured on the cover of Time magazine on September 12, 1927, he was the self-styled "prince of storytellers." He composed some one hundred and fifty novels, mainly of the suspense and international intrigue nature, but including romances, comedies, and parables of everyday life. He was the earliest writer of spy fiction as understood today, and invented the "Rogue Male" school of adventure thrillers that was later exploited by John Buchan and Geoffrey Household. Undoubtedly his most renowned work was The Great Impersonation it was filmed thrice, the last time as a strong piece of wartime propaganda. Perhaps Oppenheim's most enduring creation is the character of General Besserley, the protagonist of General Besserley's Puzzle Box and General Besserley's New Puzzle Box (one of his last works). Much of Oppenheim's work possesses a unique escapist charm, featuring protagonists who delight in Epicurean meals, surroundings of intense luxury, and the relaxed pursuit of criminal practice, on either side of the law. The book is only 161 pages long, and yet it took me a few days to read it. With formal, stately language using arcane terms such as myrmidons, oubliettes, cynosure, discoursive and latitudinarian, the going was a little slow. But the underlying story is fascinating, the characters vividly drawn. The soft, romantic ending was a mild surprise. The book made a nice change of pace from my usual rapid fire mystery reading.Product details

Good yarn..
Enjoyed the journey through the story. Started slow, but picked up quickly. Great read by classic author.
I found this novel most interesting. It has enough characters to keep the story moving. Some situations where not what they seemed.
This book was a good book to read. It had enough subterfuge to make it worth reading. The characters were built upon and allowed to grow in the telling of the story much as we all hope to grow as we age. All in all, a good book to read.
Interesting premise but overlong. I had the feeling that this book was "toned down" somewhat from then book the author would have written in order to make it palatable to his audience. It basically is about a barrister who wins an acquittal for a guilty client and undergoes a crisis of conscience while falling in love with his former client's wife.
I occasionally like to read mysteries and thrillers from a much earlier day to see the changes that have occurred through the years. The style of writing is much different, as are the customs and the characters. I prefer today's faster paced stories, but this is an interesting change of pace.
My oral vocabulary has improved after reading this. It has everything; mystery, romance, crime, intrigue, wonderful yet concise descriptions, and a solid, satisfying conclusion. It's also an excellent look at a certain time in history when some wealthy women kept their cocaine on their dressing tables and many people owned automobiles.
